Built-in Free 3G connectivity uses the same wireless signals that cell phones use, but there are no monthly fees or commitments—Amazon pays for Kindle’s 3G wireless connectivity. The added convenience of 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, while on the go—without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, Kindle 3G is a great option for travelers.

In a nutshell: The Samsung Galaxy S2 is Samsung’s flagship phone for 2011 and is the first Samsung phone to be powered by a dual-core processor. The Galaxy S2 runs Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread) and has an incredible 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen. Other highlights include 1080p Full HD video recording, an 8 megapixel still camera and a secondary front-facing camera for making video calls.

You’d think that the best phone couldn’t get much better, but Samsung have entered some kind of crazed accelerated development programme and have introduced loads of improvements over the original Galaxy S. The first thing you notice is the absolutely incredible screen. This has grown from a huge 4 inches to a mega-enormous 4.3 inches, matching the HTC Desire HD and making this the biggest screen on any phone. The poor old Apple iPhone 4 has just 3.5 inches of screen. But it’s not just size that counts. The Galaxy S2 introduces a new technology called Super AMOLED Plus, which is eye-popping in its brightness and clarity. The Super AMOLED display of the original Galaxy S was leagues ahead of most smartphones, so to leap forward to yet another generation of display technology is mightily impressive. It’s certainly a match for Apple’s Retina display, even if the S2′s resolution of 480 x 800 pixels isn’t quite the highest.

The surface area of the phone has grown to cater for the enlarged screen, but the phone still rests in the hand nicely due to its incredible thinness. At just 8.5mm, it’s the thinnest smartphone on the market (the iPhone 4 is a flabby 9.3mm). Below the screen you’ll find a single home button flanked by two touch-sensitive buttons for Menu and Back. It’s a minimalist design that gives you everything you need. At 116g the phone is pretty light for such a high-powered beasty, and that’s thanks to the plastic construction. It lacks the high-end feel of a metallic case, but avoids the reception problems that have plagued the iPhone 4 and also to some extent the HTC Desire S. Something called Gorilla Glass is used to protect that all-important Super AMOLED Plus display.

The operating system is the latest version of Android – 2.3 (Gingerbread). Android is our top choice for smartphone OS, and global sales of Android phones seem to be overtaking iPhone quite decisively. The number of apps available has exceeded the 100,000 mark and is continuing to grow rapidly. Android 2.3 is combined here with a new version of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface – version 4.0. Along with various home screen customisations and Swype text input for faster typing on the QWERTY keyboard, this introduces a number of hubs into the user interface. The Social Hub, which we’ve seen on previous Samsung smartphones brings together contacts, calendar and email with Instant Messaging, facebook and twitter. Reader’s Hub is a platform for ebooks and magazines, with access to over 2000 newspapers in 49 languages and featuring interactive features like page curling effects. Music Hub is a combined music player and Music Store – we’ll have to see how that works out. Perhaps more interesting is the Games Hub where you can download premium HD games (and some free games) optimised for the S2′s dual-core processor, Super AMOLED Plus screen and 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. The phone also comes preloaded with social games – We Farm, Safari, We Rule, We City. Being an Android phone, the S2 comes with pre-installed with all things Google, including Google Maps 5.0, Gmail, YouTube, Google Calendar, Google Talk and Picasa integration.

The headline grabbing feature of the S2 is its dual-core processor. It isn’t the first dual-core phone to be released (that was the LG Optimus 2X) but it’s the most highly anticipated. Anyone who’s experienced the instantaneous response of the single-core Galaxy S might question the need for a faster processor, but the 1.2GHz dual core processor opens up new possibilities in video – particularly the Full HD video recording capability and the enhanced gaming experience.

It’s logical then to talk about the camera next. This has been dramatically improved, with an 8 megapixel sensor and an LED flash (which was incomprehensibly missing from the original Galaxy S.) The camera has plenty of features taken from Samsung’s digital camera range, including autofocus, touch focus, face detection, smile shot and image stabilisation. As already mentioned, the video camera has been uprated so that it can now record at Full HD resolution – that’s 1080p format. Only the LG Optimus 2X can match that, and the Samsung does a better job with a sharper, more detailed picture quality. A secondary front-facing video camera is available for making video calls. There’s a pre-installed image and video editor too.

The media player brings a great deal of functionality to the table and is capable of playing DivX and XviD format movies. The Super AMOLED Plus screen and the dual-core processor are a match for any video you might want to watch. 5.1 virtual surround sound is also supported. There’s also an FM radio with RDS for listening to music on the move. Naturally a 3.5mm headphone socket lets you plug in your choice of headphones, and you can also connect the phone to a Full HD TV via DLNA and play movies or even games on a big screen.

Another area where Samsung have taken a great leap forward is in internet connectivity. The Galaxy S2 has an uprated implementation of HSPA enabling downloads of up to 21 Mbps where a network supports it (3 have just rolled this out.) That’s faster than home broadband! This really is a phone created by speed junkies. And when it comes to web browsing, the fast internet access combined with a crisp, large display, multi-touch zoom and the super-fast Android web browser with Flash support and BBC iPlayer compatibility make it top dog.

Signal strength and call quality are good too (hey, it’s a phone as well?) and battery life is excellent. For a device with so many features, you’ll probably be playing with it all day and night, but Samsung have recognised the need for a monster battery and have stepped up to the mark. The S2 has a 1650mAh battery, which is the largest we’ve seen as standard in any mobile. Amazingly it doesn’t seem to add any great weight to the phone (have Samsung secretly captured an alien spacecraft and stolen their technology?) Nevertheless, as any smartphone user knows, overnight battery charging will be required for the first couple of months at least. Once the battery – and the user – have been properly conditioned, the battery may last 2-3 days. That’s pretty good going.

We’re totally in awe of the Samsung Galaxy S2. To our minds, this is without question the best phone on the market today. The only reason not to buy it is the cost. But as of June 2011, it’s available for free on contract for around £30 per month, which is gallons less than the iPhone 4. There will be more dual-core phones released later in 2011, and the next iPhone of course. But if you want our opinion, you should choose the Galaxy S2 – you won’t have any regrets.

Others berated the name and made jokes that were not remotely funny. The early reviews were marginal at best – we handed the device a solid four stars. Technical folks decried the lack of Adobe Flash and the missing cameras. Now, 60,000 apps later (according to Apple, who counts every conceivable option) and just a few weeks after the first real Android 3.0 tablet contender hit the streets (Motorola Xoom), the iPad 2 has sauntered onto the playing field. Some expected pure gold: a tablet that runs as fast as a laptop and weighs less than a newspaper.

Yet, the reality with the iPad 2 is that Apple has taken an iterative approach. In many ways, the iPad 2 is a crowd pleaser because it does not rock the boat.

At 241mm tall, 186mm wide, and 8.6mm thick, the iPad 2 is just a hair smaller than the original iPad and it’s thinner than the iPhone 4. It has a curved edge that makes it look a bit more ‘space age’ and, surprisingly, easier to grasp because you can curve your fingers more easily around the bezel.

The most dramatic change is the weight. At 680 grams, the iPad 2 is 80g lighter than the first iPad. That is about the same weight as a juicy red apple (curious, eh?). Yet, in using the device, it feels strangely lighter than it really is.

Apple has made a second-gen iPad that feels lighter and more nimble, and its newfound mobility means it has lost the annoying heft of the original model. Meanwhile, the Motorola Xoom, at 730 grams, now feels like the tank that it is. (More about that later, because we do prefer the speedy processor on the Xoom that handles 3D maps and games.)

One other observation about the design: compared to the iPhone 4, the iPad 2 feels a bit more like a plastic plate (the back is actually metal) as though it really needs a protective case. Part of the reason for this ‘cheap plastic’ impression is that the device is one-third thinner than the original and 15 per cent lighter.

Overall, the design is a stunner – it’s brilliant. The aesthetics are much improved, although not everything about the iPad 2 is so equally impressive.

Apple iPad 2: Verdict

The lighter design, A5 processor, cameras, gyroscope, and other enhancements increase the iPad 2′s value over the iPad… at the same price. But the original iPad is now £100 cheaper and Apple has had a full year to innovate further without really delivering much.

We really wanted to see some jaw-dropping new features. In actual real-world speed tests, the most common apps don’t perform any faster… yet. Maybe that will change when developers start to optimise apps for the iPad 2′s hardware. But for now, only a few apps truly benefit.

So where does that leave the iPad 2?

We liked:

When pressed into a corner, we have to admit that the new design is attractive enough to make anyone want to upgrade. It’s simply gorgeous, and retains the solid, premium feel of the original iPad.

The lighter styling means more mobility, and even less reliance on a laptop. Steve Jobs talks about a post-PC world – we’re not there yet, but the writing is most certainly on the wall.

The speed improvements for GarageBand, iMovie, and several games are noteworthy. As with Android 3.0 tablets like the Xoom, the iPad 2′s best days are certainly ahead of it.

Will developers start to produce games and apps that make the most of the A5 chip inside the iPad 2? We’d like to think the answer is yes – but those same developers will not want to forget about about the 15 million people out there who already have a first generation iPad – so the extent to which games and apps will be optimised is unclear.

Will the limitations of the first iPad hold the iPad 2 back? Probably. How much, we’ll have to wait and see. But this is almost certainly one of the reasons behind Apple’s reluctance to really innovate with the iPad 2.

We disliked:

One thing’s for sure – the iPad 2 is still not a great multi-tasker. As far as that particular feature goes, Android 3.0 has iOS 4 beaten hands-down. To even say that iOS supports multitasking is stretching it if you ask us.

The lack of widgets is also a drawback, and we can’t see Apple introducing them to iOS any time soon.

The cameras are also very poor – and that’s an area Apple could easily improve upon, but chose not to.

And that leads us into the real negative feature of iPad 2 – simply its lack of innovation. This is a refined iPad, with a few extra hardware features and a more powerful CPU.

Verdict:

For all the negatives, for now we think the iPad 2 is still the best tablet around.

It is much better for consuming media, has more compelling apps (especially for the larger tablet size), has a better app store ecosystem, and is light and useable.

Maybe the Xoom or some other Android 3.0 tablet can keep up…or maybe not.

It’s well documented that chopping the roof off a car usually includes a list of sacrifices made in exchange for open-sky motoring. This is not the case with the 2011 Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 V-10 FSI Quattro. The biggest compromise is doing without the kidney you’ll have to sell to afford the estimated $165,000 base price when the car arrives here in late fall. (Or you can wait an as-yet-unspecified period for a more affordable version with the standard R8’s 4.2-liter V-8.) But specifically compared with the R8 coupe, all the usual convertible penalties—excessive weight, reduced performance, a floppier chassis, cramped luggage space—are minor or nonexistent in the R8 spyder.

As to rigidity, thicker A- and B-pillars together with added braces and panels in the floor make up for some of the stiffness that is lost when the roof is cut. The body-in-white is only 13 pounds heavier in droptop form, and factor in the 93-pound softtop and the electrohydraulic hardware that powers its operation plus pop-up rollover protection, and the total weight gain is kept to 220 or so pounds. Mitigating the weight gain, however, is new bodywork in the rear. Instead of aluminum panels, the rear quarter-panels and the section that covers the stowed top are made of carbon fiber.

Still Looks Luscious

Thankfully, the R8’s styling has been preserved in the convertible conversion. The distinctive “sideblade” air intakes from the coupe have been subbed out for more conventional scoops in front of the rear wheels, and the upshot is that the V-10 convertible is an inch narrower than the coupe, equal to the V-8 coupe’s 75.0-inch width. The windshield is lowered slightly, and height drops 0.3 inch. When tucked away, the top sits above a large portion of the V-10, making an engine-viewing window impossible, but two slotted silver vents running along the rear deck add some visual pop. Like the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 that the R8 has much in common with, the rear window operates independently of the top. Raised to a maximum of six inches with the top down, the window acts as a wind blocker and helps reduce turbulence; lower it with the top up, and the opening allows engine noise to flow into the cabin for increased aural pleasure.

Luggage space, a four-cubic-foot trunk in the nose, is unchanged, although some might say such modest volume is already a compromise. The interior is almost identical to that of the coupe with enough head- and legroom to comfortably fit six-foot-plus types, at least as far as your five-foot-nine test driver can guess. Audi added a three-bin storage compartment in the back of the cabin between the seats. This is where the CD changer and the iPod-friendly Audi music interface are located in the spyder, which frees up space in the glove box. One innovation that comes with the spyder is a set of microphones in the seatbelts for the hands-free Bluetooth phone connection. There are three discs along the length of each shoulder belt, and the system automatically recognizes which is closest to the speaker. We tried it with the top and windows down at about 45 mph, and it works amazingly well. It’s an option on European models, but we’re hoping it will be standard for our market.

So, Yeah, Not Much Different

That’s about it for changes and compromises in going from coupe to convertible. The R8 has always been the most user-friendly supercar of the current era, and the spyder variant is no different. Take the fully automated top, for instance. It goes up or down in 19 seconds and at speeds of up to 31 mph, and it works at temperatures down to five degrees. With the roof sealed, the cabin is quiet. Audi claims it’s barely louder inside at highway speeds than the coupe’s. Top-down wind buffeting is minimal, even with all the windows lowered.

The 5.2-liter V-10 is unchanged, with 525 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Audi estimates that the added weight adds about 0.2 second to the 0-to-60 acceleration performance. Based on our R8 5.2 coupe test results, we expect a 0-to-60-mph time of about 3.7 seconds for the convertible. Top speed drops a mere 1 mph to 195. The high amount of carry-over also means the R8’s faults remain, although those primarily center on the balky six-speed R tronic automated manual transmission. Shifts at less than full throttle are about as subtle as Glenn Beck, pulling away from a stop is rarely smooth, and the steering-wheel-mounted paddles are too small to find during aggressive steering maneuvers. The six-speed manual with a beautiful gated shifter is much more rewarding and avoids the multi-thousand-dollar stupidity tax ($9100 on the coupe) for choosing the two-pedal transmission option.

Driving the R8 spyder feels remarkably similar to the coupe, and we didn’t find a rough enough road on our test drive to reveal any real-world loss of rigidity. The steering is light but direct, and the standard Quattro all-wheel drive helps keep the handling predictable and increase driver confidence. Push the R8 spyder too hard, and it will reassuringly understeer. It might not be as primeval an experience as driving a mid-engine Ferrari or an early 911, but the R8 is easy to drive incredibly fast without worrying about a perilous fall from a roadside cliff if speed should surpass talent.

R8 production for our market is currently limited to 1000 cars annually, split about 50/50 between the V-8 and V-10. Volume won’t increase to make room for the spyder, which will take out about 200 units of the V-10 production.
Like the R8 5.2 coupe, the spyder comes loaded with features, including magnetorheological shocks (a.k.a. Audi magnetic ride), LED headlamps, navigation, and a crystal-clear Bang & Olufsen stereo. We’re expecting some news from Audi in the next few days about whether or not ceramic brakes will be available in the U.S. Customers can choose among three roof-fabric colors (red, black, and brown) and 11 standard exterior paints. Audi also is happy to paint the car hot pink, or any other hue, provided you have the cash.

So there you have it: all the fun and prowess of the fixed-roof R8 5.2, while also able to enjoy the warm summer sun. That’s the sort of deal we can live with. (Hey, speaking of deals, anyone want to buy a kidney? There’s a red one of these that we have our eyes on.)

Not quite but it does have a motor. This board addresses the twin troubles of our age- the desire for eco-friendliness and the need for an over weight populace to avoid exercise at all costs-by adding an electronic motor. Updated from the Boom Borda 1 its successor is lighter, faster and is a board that Marty McFly would be proud of.

Helping you parade or more than likely power down the street is the 600W brushless motor that pulls 3600rpm. Control how fast, or in our case how slow, you go with a pull on the handheld trigger controller. It’s a little touchy; we tapped a little too hard and the neighbours Begonia’s didn’t thank us.

Bursting to speeds of 30mph maximum it is a little nipper. You may want to nail your feet to it if you’re planning an Evil Knievel style trip. Oh, and you can’t reverse either, apparently you have to do some kind of kick flip, or nose grind double back face plant?

If you manage to take it out with all your limbs in tact, you’ll see the bod’ on the board has had a once over. Huge chunky tyres and alloy wheels encased in rubber mean the wheels don’t tend to wear down as easy as the first edition. You could skate to Anglesey. We doubt you’d make it back though.

Other nifty bits include the ABS style breaking (bit of an overkill on a skateboard), a spring loaded handle and a lighter frame. It still weighs the equivalent of an obese child though.

As always Apple are remaining fairly tight lipped about the actual spec and features on the new iPhone 5 due for release in the Autum of 2011 but one thing we know for sure when it comes to iPhone 5 is that it will run on Apple’s latest operating system, iOS 5. The third beta version of iOS 5 was recently released to developers, and besides bringing new security functions, personalized ringtones and the new notification center, it brings the “Assistive Touch” feature that seems to take the place of iPad and iPhone’s buttons.

This new touch panel allows users to control, directly from the gadget’s display, a series of functions that normally required the assistance of hardware buttons. Thus, the Home button, Mute button and the volume buttons become useless if “Assistive Touch” is enabled.

The options “Gestures”, “Device”, “Home” and “Favorites” are found in the Assistive Touch menu. The “Gestures” option will allow you to perform gestures using up to 5 fingers, tapping “Device” will open a menu that offers the following commands: Rotate Screen, Lock Screen, Volume Up, Volume Down and Shake, “Home” works just like the physical button “Home”, and “Favorites” will allow the users to save any customized gestures. The “Favorites” option will also allow access to the gestures “Swipe” and “Pinch”.

The implementation of “Assistive Touch” led users to believe that the future mobile devices, such as iPhone 5 and iPad 3, will no longer have the “Home” or the volume buttons. Even though the new touch panel may seem more practical, and some might even consider that an iPhone, for example, will look more attractive without a “Home” button, many of the Apple’s customers don’t believe that the company will give up on any hardware buttons any time soon.
